Its main character, Sayuki, is an extremely popular actress, and its second season was a major disappointment.
Its latest season, titled “Yokai na kono wa yokai ni” (“Yokage wa Yukata ni”), is the third-highest-rated show on television, according to the Japan Broadcast Corp.’s ratings tracker, with a 2.8 rating.
In a recent interview with NHK, the station’s local affiliate, Kananayaka stated that he and the staff wanted to return to the series’ roots, but the series was not ready.
Kananarya said he didn’t expect the series to earn any money in its current season, but would consider doing a new season.
“It will be something that we’ll think about in the future,” he said.
The show has also faced challenges from other sources, with Kanna and the manga’s sequel, Yokai na Konna ni Koi wa Yonkatsu, both ending their runs earlier than planned.
A second season of Kanna was delayed by six months in October, while the sequel has been a hit on streaming service Crunchyroll.
The series’ most recent episode, aired on January 25, is currently viewed more than 5 million times on Crunchy.
The ratings spike from the first season is also partly due to the success of the manga, which had more than 2.7 million copies in print.
However, the show has struggled with its sequel.
“YOKAI na Kanna ni Koin wa Yonkyu na Toshi” (“A Tale of Yokai and Konna”), the second half of the second season, is not expected to earn much money this season, Kananyas staff said in the interview.
The manga’s popularity has been particularly pronounced this year, especially after it drew an international audience of more than 50 million viewers.
“We have to adapt,” Kananya said, noting that the manga would also likely struggle in the anime industry as the industry’s viewership has been shrinking.
The most successful anime series to date has been Studio Ghibli’s film, “Cars,” which grossed more than $1.6 billion at the global box office.
In contrast, “Yakusoku ni Taisho ga Nai” (“The Tale of the Two Girls”) has garnered only $1 million at the box office so far, according a recent study from Kantar Media, a market research company.
The anime industry is also trying to expand its presence in Asian markets, with companies such as Funimation and Hulu offering services to stream original anime content on their services.
While Kananyi and his staff hope to revive the show, they have not yet figured out a solution to the show’s ratings problem.
“If we do decide to revive, we can’t do it for a while, so we will have to find a way,” Kananaya said.
“In the meantime, we hope that people will watch our show again in the next two years.”
